The Evelyn Oldfield Unit provides free, accessible and practical training for Refugee & Migrant Community Organisations on a range of subjects, in order to help groups to build their capacity, develop skills and knowledge, and address issues that are relevant to them and their communities.

All events are free and open to staff, volunteers and users of refugee, asylum seeker and migrant organisations unless otherwise stated.

Monitoring and Evaluation Training
Thursday 26th August 2010, 10am – 4.30pm
Venue: St Giles Church, 81 Camberwell Church St, SE5 8RB (to be confirmed)
Improving your existing monitoring and evaluating systems
This full day workshop will support you to build on your existing tools for monitoring and evaluating. We will look at a case study of good practice, think about how to capture outcomes, explore concepts such as ‘impact’ and ‘social return on investment,’ experiment with different information-collecting tools, and consider what funders are looking for in terms of ‘robust’ evaluation. We will also learn from each other by sharing tips of what works well.

Strategic Focus Workshop, Stage 1
Thursday 9th September 2010, 1pm-5pm

A First Step in Strategic Focus
This half-day workshop will support groups to think about strategic planning as a step by step process. Attendees are invited to attend all 3 of these sessions (see below for details of the other 2). It is also possible to attend these as single sessions. This first workshop will allow you to review your organisation as a whole and to set out a plan for conducting strategic analysis.
For: staff and trustees involved in looking at their organisation’s future direction and strategy.

Myth busting: Challenging Pre conceptions and Stereotypes about Minority Groups
Tuesday 14th of September 2010, 10am – 4pm
Venue: Redbridge Equalities and Community Council (RECC), Gants Hill, East London
This innovative full day course will support participants to challenge the negative myths and lies circulated by the media and others about minority groups. Using ‘myth busting’ information and research, you will practice your public speaking techniques and make presentations in small, friendly groups. The training will arm you to challenge myths on topics including immigration, Islam & Roma AND help develop your confidence and abilities in public speaking. We are also offering follow up support to help you deliver your own myth busting presentations direct to your community.

Health and Safety at Work – An Introduction
Thursday 16th September 2010, 10am – 3pm
Venue: Epicentre, 41 West Street, Leytonstone E11 4LJ
This course, offered in partnership with the London Hazards Centre, will provide an introduction to health and safety at work and is suitable for small to medium sized RMCO’s. This full day training will examine relevant Health and Safety legislation, help you to understand the essential health and safety requirements for your organisation and provide practical solutions to creating a safe working environment. The day will cover:
- Legal duties of employers under health & safety legislation
- Identifying hazards and risk assessments
- Accident reporting
- Where to go for help.
This course is suitable for those people requiring the practical knowledge needed to create a safe and healthy workplace and for those who are currently unclear about their duties to staff, volunteers and the public.

Community Engagement

Do you want to reach out to more or new beneficiaries?
This half-day session will look at how to engage those in your community considered ‘hard to reach.’ We will look at what engagement is, why some participate and others do not and we will experiment with some innovative tools to better encourage participation. We will also looks at social networking and other trends in communication that may be appropriate to RMCOs.

Strategic Focus Workshop, Stage 2
Thursday 7th October 2010, 1pm-5pm

External and Internal Analysis, Setting Priorities
This is the second in a series of strategic focus workshops. This session will concentrate on analysing external trends and how these may impact on your organisation and internal analysis, i.e. what is working well in your organisation and what needs to change. Based on this information, groups will be supported to conduct further strategic analysis on their own. This will allow groups to consider their future choices, to evaluate these and to agree a direction. An EOU consultant will be available to support groups with this process beyond the workshop.

Devising an Action Plan
This is the third and final workshop on strategic focus. In this session, we will bring together all the work done so far, reflect and evaluate. We will also develop both a shorter and longer-term action plan, consider how to bring stakeholders in line with new thinking, reflect on strategic management, i.e. how to stick to the plan and consider what next.
